Dr. Schulman’s major research activities have focused on clinical studies in venous thromboembolism, including several randomized trials. The most important trials investigated the appropriate duration of secondary prophylaxis after venous thromboembolism. Dr. Schulman was also the director of a regional hemophilia treatment center in Sweden for 8 years and he has devoted another large part of his research to hemophilia, its treatment with for example continuous infusion of factor concentrates and complications of viral transmission by blood products. He is currently involved in trials with new antithrombotic agents, such as the oral thrombin inhibitors and with pentasaccarides.Dr. Schulman is since 2004 chairman of the subcommittee on Control of Anticoagulation of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
