Dr. Shaughnessy is a cell biologist whose major research interests include the effects of anticoagulants on bone morphology and metabolism. Dr. Shaughnessy’s previous research training has been in the areas of mitochondrial bioenergetics, cancer metastasis and fibrinolysis. Currently, his research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and is primarily focussed, at a basic science level, on determining the effects of heparin and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) on bone. In addition, he is involved in several clinical trials which are seeking to use biochemical markers of bone turnover and measurements of bone density to determine the effects of longterm warfarin and/or LMWH therapy. Finally, he is the founding scientist of Osteokine Inc., a recently formed biotechnology company that has as its main focus the development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of postmenopausal bone loss. Dr. Shaughnessy has received national recognition in the form of a Grant-in-Aid from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and he is also the recipient of a Research Scholarship Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
